Moka Pot / Stove Top Brewer

Brew Time:

2-5 minutes depending on brewer size

Serves:

Servings dependant on brewer size

About this method

Travel to Italy and you will find one these in every kitchen. They are known for their punchy 'strong' flavoured coffee and allows you to have an espresso style experience at home without the firing up an expensive espresso machine that takes up 3/4 of the kitchen bench.

By forcing very high temperatures through the coffee, it can leave a bitter tasting drink in your cup. However, using the right coffee (we recommend a medium roast such as our Morning Blend) and some careful playing around with your stove setting, you can produce a coffee for your morning routine that will have you ready to start your day with a bang as good as any machine made espresso.

What you'll need:

  • Espresso/fine ground coffee

  • Stove

  • Your favourite Moka Pot.

The Max Method

Step 1

Fill the lower chamber with water until the level sits just below the valve on the side (very important not to fill above this valve)

Step 2

Place the coffee basket in the chamber and fill with coffee grind until its to the top and level. Don't squash it down.

Step 3

Screw on the top chamber.

Step 4

Place the brewer on a stove with a high heat and the lid left open.

Step 5

Eventually you will start to see the coffee coming through into the top chamber. Once it starts to gurgle and spit, remove from the heat. Add a drop of milk (optional), serve and enjoy!

Top Tip

  • If your coffee is tasting very bitter and dry, try using a higher heat on your stove to force the water through the coffee faster.

  • If your coffee is tasting more sour (such as a strong acidic taste), try using a lower heat on your stove to slow the water down and give it time to extract more sweetness.
